3 Simple (But Effective) Poem Prompts I’d Give Anyone Starting Writing Poetry
Honorifics, Odes, & Lyrics
I've been writing poems for years. It all started as gifts to loved ones.
These are the 3 simple (but effective) prompts that got me started learning poetry and giving them as offerings I now offer you and anyone else starting out (or who wants to get started):
Prompt #1: Write an ode to fam/friend/lover
Pour your creative heart out, blend with figurative language, and find a fit form. Serve for a birthday, anniversary, or anytime really. Said lover you write to can always be the World, can also be you.
Prompt #2: Write a collective hero lyric
Memorialize a grand epic detailing everyone's effort. Ask for folks to contribute, whether with words or more detail to include. Combine it all into a greater vision, rearranging the mosaic of memories into a monument.
Prompt #3: Write a poem honoring a moment
Sing a celebration or elegy of someone or something, or simply everyday existence. Everything is always happening, so stopping to tend to any moment that inspires you and share it can make a gift of beauty.
Honestly, I know these 3 prompts sound basic, but their generality can lend to synthesizing with any other poetry prompt or form. Giving even more.
So I'm glad I can offer them to you.
