Before the world became as it is today, when the atmosphere was younger -
Or younger-at-heart anyway - when the air was filled with something like wonder,
And they contained so many multitudes, they balanced over four million millennia
After passing down their gifted power via the sun’s rays across every area
Back before the reigning terror now baking the biosphere for plunder -
Before the world became as it is today, when the atmosphere was younger.
After burying their secrets dense and deep underground, in carbon locked
The atmosphere wrapped cozily around all they loved and could ever want
Until white vampires extracted their secrets, sucked and priced all they could steal
Unleashing the wrath of wraiths of all gone until it became hard not to harm, harder still to heal
Filled with the curse of toxicants and an increasing carbon dioxide dilution
To the point where now every year four million people die due to ambient air pollution.
Which doesn’t even count the deaths haunting the atmosphere from warming
From fossil poltergeists hard-pressed against one another, extreme storming
Swirling plumes of phantoms powering dark forces from emissions sources to abate
By putting to rest the spectres of haunt and harm, to improve every breath you take
Until the world becomes as it could be, when the atmosphere isn’t up in the air
Figuratively, but in our hearts, like the future, haunted now by how it’s all in our care.
