(PV) Solar Power š
A Parody Poem of Lorde's "Solar Power" š PV Solar DOE Explainer
I hate extreme weather, the hot or cold
I tend to make multiple plans (we can model it)
But global heat comes when carbon takes ahold
Can we kick it? Yeah, we can
Silicon cells in high color, overripe creatures
Solar farms and homes, on roofs and land leases
Photovoltaics (PV) exponentially increasing
Let the boys and girls lead and teach us
For not one, but all, that's all the secret is
Kinda like how energy's prettier cleaner
Let's face all our fears and just try
Forever (ever, ever, ever)
It's a new state of mind
Are you flipping the switch with me?
Earthy green, aquamarine
The sun is dancing in the cells
Turning off my cellular device getting hotter
Oh, you can't reach me? Oh well
Silicon cells in high color, overripe creatures
Solar farms and homes, on roofs and land leases
PV exponentially increasing (increasing)
Let the boys and girls lead and teach us
For not one, but all, that's all the secret is
Kinda like how energy's prettier cleaner
Turn it on in a new kind of bright
It's solar (solar, solar, solar)
Plug-in and let the bliss begin
Blink three times when interconnected
That solar-olar-olar power
Solar-olar-olar power
Solar-olar-olar power
Solar-olar-olar power
Solar-olar-olar power (oh)
Solar-olar-olar power
On Lordeās Solar Power, The Album
Hello brightlings! Hope you get more grin than cringe out of reading my parody version of Lordeās lead single from her newest album with the same title, Solar Power. Like that time I rewrote Lady Gagaās ARTPOP as EARTHPOP, Iāve letting go of all critical brain functions to share.
I rewrote Lordeās lead single as ā(PV) Solar Powerā because I wanted to put more climate and clean energy in it; I alternatively title the original songā ā(Passive) Solar Power.ā It was funny back when the single dropped and solar industry friends and folks on #energytwitter didnāt know what to do with it but to say āokay yes. we are coolā then shrug about the lack of anything having to do with the solar power industry. This, thenā to my colleagues in Solar project modelling, manufacturing modules, negotiating development terms, fund-raising and financing, attracting buyers, selling past objections, coordinating with communities, installing projects onsite, maintenancing material, enhancing local environments, fighting the politics of it, fighting the utility for it, and innovating entire categories of āa new kind of bright,ā making it accessible, happen, and equitable whatever it takesā is for you!
Hereās where Iāll feel compelled to write some sort of review of the albumā¦ which Iāll instead eschew to tell you Why and What Songs from the album have gripped me. The great Amitav Ghosh said it bestā not only in an entire book called The Great Derangement: Climate Change and the Unthinkable and in some fantastic novelsā but also here:
Climate change is like death, no one wants to talk about it
I cannot tell you how silly and sad Iāve felt all my life feeling like Iām waiting for crumbs of content about ONLY OUR MOST CRITICAL CRISIS ā humanās broken relation to our environmentāto fall from the tabletops of culture. Which is why I was excited when Lorde described her new album as:
A celebration of the natural world, an attempt at immortalising the deep, transcendent feelings I have when Iām outdoors. In times of heartache grief, deep love, or confusion, I look to the natural world for answers. Iāve learnt to breath out, and tune in. This is what came through.
Here are three tracks that stand-out to as Climate ChangeIsms ā along with my favorite quotes, linked lyrics, and YouTube recordings of said songs.
The Path
Now if you're looking for a saviour, well, that's not me
You need someone to take your pain for you?
Well, that's not me
'Cause we are all broken and sad
Where arŠµ the dreams that we had?
Can't find thŠµ dreams that we had
Ah-ah-ah, ah-ah-ah, ah-ah
Let's hope the sun will show us the path, path
Fallen Fruit
[Verse 1]
To the ones who came before us
All the golden ones who were lifted on a wing
We had no idea the dreams we had were far too big
Far too big
[Verse 2]
And we will walk together (We will walk)
Psychedelic garlands in our hair
Through the halls of splendor where the apple trees all grew
You'll leave us dancing on the fallen fruit[Bridge]
From the Nissan to the Phantom to the plane
We'll disappear in the cover of the rain
Took the great minds and the vapers
And a pocketful of seed
It's time for us to leave
[Verse 3]
And we will walk together (We will walk)
Psychedelic garlands in our hair
But how can I love what I know I am gonna lose?
Don't make me choose
Oceanic Feeling
[Verse 1]
Slidin' the knife under the skin
Grateful for this offering
And all the livin' things under the sun
Under the sun[Verse 3]
Oh, look, the rays are in the bay now
Can you hear the waves and the cicadas all around?
I can make anything real
Brain so hot, it's a summer body
Every day is blue and never cloudy
Don't look down
I can make anything real[Refrain]
Now the cherry-black lipstick's gathering dust in a drawer
I don't need her anymore
'Cause I got this power
I just had to breathe (Breathe out, breathe out, breathe out, breathe out)
And tune in (Tune in, tune in, tune in, tune in)
I donāt have anything more beautiful than the sounds of cicadas and waves layering vastness tying legacy to Oceanic Feelings to share with you. Thatās all Iāve got! If youāre enjoying anything new or old in culture related to climate ā feel free to share :)
Warming regards,
Adam Powers
