The Simplest Way To Overcome Confusing Folks When Talking About Systems of Weather, Climate, & Electric Grids
Here's a Technique To Simplify & Explain Systems Thinking
Everyone struggles with explaining complex systems underlying our everyday environments when trying to help someone who's been misled understand.
Personally, I have for years. Whether it was explaining to my Dad or with folks at a climate presentation. Or even working in clean energy phone sales and support.
But what changed for me was understanding the metaphor mind. And as soon as that clicked, I started to get that overcoming the difficulty of explaining systemic relationships wasn't that hard—I was just doing the wrong thing.
Here's what I should have done instead:
Put it in poetry
Learn from poets and climate communicators alike. Like Dr. Marshall Shepherd: “Weather is your mood, climate is your personality.” And following how electricity flows, I've heard it go as both bucket and bathtub analogies. But it works, like consciousness streams.
So try different figurative frames to help relate.
