Warmer than Average Washington, DC December Weather
Monday, December 13th, 2021
After this weekend’s wildy-formed warmth and swerving winds, DC’s leaning trees get a moment of reprieve. Monday is a light 5 mph breeze calming the start of the week with sunny azure skies. 7:15 AM sunrise in the mid-30s°F, 4:45 PM sunset in the mid-50s. Wear your coat, hoodie, scarf, changing it up as you go. Layer and shed like Nature, like Monday, does: for function, style, to be you, just because, with all you’ve got. To get through.
Heads up– Tuesday, there’s a rally calling on the White House & Army Corps of Engineers to take actions to #StopLine3, details here.

Similar to Monday, Tuesday is sunny with calm northerly winds bringing DC mild warmth. Dawn may come with a couple of clouds included, which scatter just as day wakes, giving bright skies. Gently guiding the district into the 50s a bit before Noon. And further still, through moonrise at 2:15 PM, Tuesday comes to the climax of its warmth late afternoon, between 3-4 PM. Right as Moon squints, locking eyes into a staring contest mid-sky with tired Sun. At that point, Sun’s had a day, so they give it just a few hours before letting Moon win, settling down at dusk.

Wednesday layers a sweater of clouds with a light breeze scarf. This should tuck temperatures down a tad, but only a degree or two from yesterday. So expect slow-roaming mostly cloudy skies, in the mostly 40s-to-50s °F here in DC. Relatively nice for the season, which of course is never just “nice” but constant concern for fossil-fueled reasons. Joining the Lower 48 blanketed in record warmth this late mid-December, we’re not alone.

Every time I start attempting to forecast Thursday, I get caught on the phrase “warmer than average.” I blink. I grab the comparison *checks notes* on average Hi 47°F / Lo 29°F. I then continue attempting to forecast Thursday, but get stuck again on “warmer than average.” Warmer than average day, week, month, winter, decade, century, glacier, atmosphere, biome, home, heart. I say it out loud, breathe, and chew on each syllable to bring myself down. To do what must be done.
Thursday will be partly sunny and warmer than your average DC in December with mid-60s highs and low-50s lows.

Whenever I’m feeling climate dismal
I skygaze and imagine Sun as the signal
The light, the lighthouse, the beacon beckoning abounds
Across DC’s mostly cloudy Friday, world-around
Both warning of warming, and calling heroes to arms
To do what must be done against now and future harms.
I breathe. Take a walk. Talk it out if I need.
I remind myself, talking about what’s wrong is a seed
To be concerned together about extreme weather and pollution
Feeds an energy source interconnected to action on climate solutions
So then even with Friday’s warmth and chance of rain
There’s the light spreading through the atmosphere pane.
